Niu launch.

On friday, january 31st, 2009, a group of students our students from academy of the pacific went to a beach in hawaii kai to finally launch the niu. Periods 1 & 2 of Ms. costello's marine science went with kawananakoa middle school to view the launching. We met with the younger students at KMS and caught the bus there with them. It took a while to get there but we finally arrived. Alll the scientist and engineers, along with the other people who helped to make this happen, were there waiting for us.

The Coconut with a Mission

Imagine You’re a Coconut

Niu cartoonImagine you're a coconut. Since you’re in Hawaii, you’re called “Niu”. But you’re not just any coconut; you’ve got some high tech electronics that help you talk to satellites and broadcast your geographical coordinates all over the world via the Internet. Like many coconuts, you will end up floating in the ocean going wherever the currents and winds may take you. Unlike those other coconuts though, you have an important mission. Your goal is to show students in Hawaii what happens to pollution that’s carelessly left behind, where it goes, and the impact that every person can have on the environment. Wow, you’ve got a lot to do! Are you prepared for this?

Why Niu?

Project Niu coconut treeThe name "Niu" has a dual-meaning for this project:

  1. Niu is the Hawaiian word for “coconut”
  2. Niu stands for "Nature Imparts Understanding"

The Niu device will be a small, autonomous, floating, ocean-going sensor that will be launched from somewhere in the watershed of Oahu and drift throughout the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific Ocean.
