Niu's First Photo

Everything is coming together Journal! So much has been going on!

I’ve been going out of the office more to run more battery and solar panel tests – but this time, I’ve been out for an entire WEEK instead of just the weekend! It’s not that I don’t like spending time with the people at Archinoetics, but I need to be out and FREE! That’s why I can’t wait until I’m out surfing the ocean!

We’re going to keep testing the batteries and solar panels though to make sure that my batteries will be getting charged up right. It would be junk if my batteries died – I’d have all this really cool equipment that won’t turn on. That would be like when you’re in the middle of watching a super intense movie or game…and all of a sudden, the electricity goes off! So it’s a good thing we’re running lots of tests and being real careful.

Also, my ship (well, the dome that I will be traveling in – sounds cooler being called a ship) just got back from the shop. It’s just about ready for me to hop in and take off. We just have to check to make sure that it floats okay and won’t leak. I’m so glad that my real ship came by. My temporary one won’t cut it out there in the open seas! It was also a little cramped. Good thing my real ship will have lots of space for relaxing. No point in going out into the nice, big ocean if your teeny, tiny ship is keeping you cooped up!

Oh, by the way, I wanted to show you these two pictures. One is of the gadgets I’ll be taking out there with me. Right now there’s a lot of wires and stuff all over the place. We’re going to clean it up, promise! But even with the wires, you can see the sensors, camera, and LCD screen. I get to take all that stuff out there with me. If I ever run into my brother, the first niu, he’ll wish he had all this stuff too. That’ll show him for leaving me behind! Don’t you hate it when your older brother or sister goes off to do something fun without you?

The other picture is the best one of all! I took it with MY camera! The same camera that I’ll be taking out there with me! Those are three of the people at Archinoetics that are helping me get ready for the launch. My camera has a fish-eye lens with over 180° view of what’s going on – neat huh?

There’s still just a few minor things that need to be done before I get to go out to the beach for testing, but it’s SO close, I can hear the waves now…

I’m really excited Journal! It could even be as soon as next week! Keep your fingers crossed so the trips to the beach won’t get pushed back!

Fuzzy Pictures

Thats one of the sacrifices we have to make! Digital photos contain huge amounts of information, and the higher the resolution (or, the clearer the picture) the more information that has to be stored. The Niu's camera is capable of taking photos of decent resolution - similar to a camera in a cell phone - but transmitting a 1 megapixel file (thats 1,000,000 pixels) would take a very long time over the satellite link, and would be very expensive (you have to pay for each byte of information you send. To get around this we have the camera take lower resolution photos (say 320 pixels by 240 pixels, or 76,800 pixels total) - instead of full resolution (1280 x 920, approximately 1,000,000 pixels total). These files may not be as sharp, but they are far easier, faster, and cheaper to transmit back to us from the open ocean. So a picture may be worth 1,000 words, but the amount of pixels can vary widely! (okay, that was lame).

But the point is, with any engineering project, you have to compromise between what you want, what your technology can provide, and what your budget allows!
