The Deep Sea: The Last Frontier

Did you know that over 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by ocean, with an average depth of over 1 mile?  That means there is more earth underwater than above, and it is under A LOT of water. To date, we still know very little about what happens in those mysterious ocean depths.

project niu launch

Our Science class joined local school Kawanakoa and we met up at Kawaikui beach park where we launched the Niu devices. Each student was able to sign the device and after our school picked up marine debris on the beach. we also logged information about the artificial structures found at the beach park and the natural aspects. We also took many pictures of debris. We hope to go on another voyage with Kawananakoa middle school again and meet up with Project Niu

Project Niu Joins Google Earth

Google Earth - Discover the Ocean

Project Niu is proud to announce that we are now included in Google Earth as part of the "Explore the Ocean" layer. Our first item included shows the Project Niu movie, which was filmed at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu (approximately 21.64N, 158.06W). We will continue to work with the Google Earth team to add more content and data, so check back and we will let you know when that happens.

Beach

Published in

On January 30 we went to the the beach to launch 3 nui's and to clean up the beach so our environment stays clean. The launch was a great success and so far they spit apart a bit and went quite far. We think it will travel quite a distance and be split apart by 100 days.

Project Niu Field Trip

Recently in class we have been discussing the Project Niu. Evan and Josiah, from Project Niu, came to talk to our classes and about theeir research project. So in class we all came up with ideas for questions to ask them. My question was where the debris and pollution was coming from, where it was going, and how is it affecting the areas its passing through. So today in the morning period one and two all met up at Ms. Costello's room, and then got on the bus and met up with KMS who invited us with them. Then we got on the bus with them and went to Kualoa beach.

Protect the Enviorment

when i was at the beach with my class when we were doing to do the niu, we had a trash pick up. THERE WAS SOOOOOOO MUCH PLASTIC THERE!! every were was at least a little peice of plastic. i didnt even really think that there would be much plastic there but boy was i wrong.now i know what they are saying when we need to REALLY, REALLY try to protect the enviroment.
who ever is reeading this, you really should protect the enviroment.

The Enviroment

I think that protecting the enviroment is important because if there are trash everywhere, then the air and water will be polluted. Water pullution means that there are a lot of trash in the ocean. For example, plastic bags might get blown into the ocean. Sea creatures might think that it's food and go fot it. However, the plastic bags will kill the sea creatures. Protecting the enviroment also helps our world. Trees gives off oxygen and we, humans, need oxygen. But if there were no trees left in the world, then there will be no oxygen, and everyone will DIE!

Protecting the Enviorment

Protecting the Enviorment
Protecting the enviorment is important because it helps our world. Imagine living in a place where there is trash everywhere,  the sea, and air is polluted. That is how the world will be like if we don't protect the enviorment. There are a lot of things you can do to protect the enviorment. Some of those things is to pick up trash lying on the street, you can recycle, and you can carpool so that you can save gas and money.
